As we finished up the last book, I wanted to ask the question, “Is there a right way to express anger?” Anger is a emotion, one that we as human beings experience throughout our lives. If you read through the section on anger in the book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD, you will learn that there is a right way. If we act in a way that is harmful to others by expressing anger by being violent or accusatory, or by taking our frustration out on another person, then we are not expressing our anger in a nonviolent manner.
If you embrace the fact that you are angry and look inside to see why, what need was not met or what boundary was crossed, and express that you feel the anger then it is nonviolent. Anger is an emotion we all feel, but how we handle it can move from a reaction to an action, and we can serve ourselves and others better. Supressed anger is not healthy, but expressed anger in the right way can be.
