The book The HeartMath Solution  by Doc Childre and Howard Martin with Donna Beech suggests we have a higher heart and a lower heart.  What exactly does that mean?  And where exactly do you operate from?

Let me define them.  We all have feelings, emotions that respond to situations.  We feel things strongly at times, but that doesn’t mean that all emotion is driven by the heart.  Many times, emotions come from the head, an emotion based on a previous experience instead of a heart opening or feeling of compassion.  A lower heart refers those feelings that are colored by attachments and conditions that are placed on them by the mind, belief systems and past experiences.  They are conditional and can be considered conditional love such as “I’ll love you if…”  Loving and caring with expectations, conditions and attachments can be draining, unsatisfying, and even exhausting.

High heart is unconditional and is more allowing.  It expresses authentically and without any expectations.  Being authentic and acting from this heart expression of love and compassion with no attachment and no expectation is the work of the higher heart.  It offers intuitive understanding and potential solutions.  Loving and caring from the higher heart can be regenerative, satisfying and can maximize our own wellbeing.

So the question is, from which heart do you operate in your life?  Do you do things from reaction, a sense of duty, or with attachment and expectation? Or do you move from the heart with a genuine, authentic sense of service with compassion, understanding and no expectations?
