We all experience stress. It can come in sudden experiences, or it can be something we live with continuously as in chronic stress. Sometimes chronic stress becomes so much of who we are, it becomes like a bad habit, one that we are so addicted to that we don’t even recognize it. In chapter three of the book The HeartMath Solution by Doc Childre and Howard Martin with Donna Beech there is a section that covers what chronic stress does to us. One point that is made in the book is most heart problems are the extreme outcome of years of inner stress.
Scientific studies have shown that common emotions like tension, frustration and sadness can trigger a drop in the blood supply to the heart. Rare stressful events can have an impact, but low levels of stress experienced in everyday life can trigger bigger problems.
Our bodies are made to handle stress in response to anything that disrupts our normal balance. The body response involves physical and chemical reactions in the body’s autonomic nervous system and in the hormonal system, including the release of adrenaline that increases heart rate and breathing, and tenses muscles, and the release of noradrenaline and cortisol which in balanced amounts are essential in for the healthy functioning of the body. The problems begin to occur when the body is constantly responding to stress, and the levels rise too high and for long periods of time. This can impair immune function, increase bone loss, reduce muscle mass, increase fat, impair memory and so much more. The little stresses add up far more that the big event stresses do.
Bottom line is, we get used to the chronic stress, like a habit, and our body never gets a chance to recover. Then we begin to see the toll the stress has taken, or we react or try to cover it up, and our health can go downhill.
To help our body, and our heart, we need to find a balance to deal with the stress and allow our body the chance to recover. There are techniques to learn and use, many in this book, like Freeze-Frame. Then we can allow our heart to lead us to a bigger fulfilling life.
