“A Path through the Jungle” by Prof Steve Peters is described as a psychological health and well-being program to develop robustness and resilience and is our current book on Quantum Leap book club.
Following are reflections from the first part of the teaching and the book that I found key.
Overview as I’m understanding it.
The model presented in the book is a way of simplifying the components of the mind into the different operating systems. The reactive mind often considered more primitive is the one linked with a motions, and in the model is referred to as the chimp. The second part of the model is that of the human. This is part of the brain that is more around thinking and logic and putting things into perspective with future consequences or outcomes and this part is referred to as the human in the model. The third is referred to as the computer and this is seen in the model as that an operating system that has input some information from both the chimp and the human. These operating systems can provide information that can help or hinder the user going forward. It is up to eat one of us to program our computer, such that it is a help.
Quick summary of the three in action. When something happens, the chimp can immediately react. It’s strong, five times stronger than human, for example the smell of bread in the bakery smell on medially and buy some and eat it human on the other hand, also likes the flavour and the smell knows that it has already eaten and additional eating at this time is not needed and could make it sleepy or gain XS weight. The computer is faster than the cheap and human, so by putting in automatic responses to the computer this will assist because without useful automatic responses, the stronger, though less disciplined, chimp tends to win, and the bread is eaten. Happy from moment may not feel so good after. NB Bread can be delicious, nutritious and sustaining. This is more about who, which part of the brain, it’s making the decisions on the actions taken.
The purpose of knowing the three components, as presenting the model, is to have tools to increase understanding of oneself, self-respect, care, and even a sense of humour, and the ability to use these fun words, such as my chimp did it! And calling ourselves out on things For what they are being kind to oneself understanding of the chimp is the temp and taking responsibility for managing the champ and what we put into the computer so that we have a strong set of tools back by commitment knowing that long-term outcomes our house to have, however, we wish to create them without being hijacked by short-term drives by the more primitive part of the brain.
Important to note that this makes no part of the brain, wrong bad, and certainly does not diminish in anyway, the importance of emotions. The aim is to know who is talking? Is it there more primitive drives, is it you’re very useful intuition, is it the passion that stirs the creation of a beautiful painting OR is it the logical, rational part OR both and moderated by the ‘computer’ for a seamless outcome. Each component has no intrinsic good or bad this model is more it’s about knowing what part of the brain is bringing us to information, and therefore moving to consciousness, and choice of action, or choice in thoughts and feelings to retained or to change thoughts, emotions and/or actions.
